COMMON TECHNICAL QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS:

·        INTERNET / WEB SITE POP UPS:

o   Q: Suddenly pops appear on my screen, what do I do?

o   A: Resist the inclination to close the popups!  Stop clicking the mouse immediately! Clicking on pop ups can install rogue software to your computer!  The first thing to do is to simultaneously PRESS CTRL ALT and DEL on your keyboard, then choose TASK MANAGER, then click on the TAB - APPLICATIONS.  Look for every instance of Internet Explorer or what ever browser you are using, if there are multiples of Internet Explorer running, click in the list Internet Explorer and CHOOSE END TASK.  Be sure to do this for each instance of Internet Explorer that you find in the task list.  Next, reboot your computer.  After the reboot, if you know how, clear your browser cache, please do so.  If not, it's ok.  As long as nothing that popped up was clicked, chances are the machine didn’t get infected and it will function normally.  If problems persist, have a professional look at the machine to find and eradicate the rogue software.  [This instruction is specific to machines running Windows 7 or Windows XP]

·         MICROSOFT OUTLOOK

o Q: A column heading in the Outlook inbox is gone.  Usually I see To, From and Subject at the top and it's missing. How do I get that back?

o A: Hover the mouse over any of the columns and RIGHT CLICK, next LEFT CLICK on FIELD CHOOSER, find the field in the list that is missing, then DRAG it into the column area and let go.  Once it is there, it can be dragged back and forth for placement purposes.

·         WINDOWS UPDATES

o   Q: What setting should I use for Windows Updates?  [This instruction is specific to machines running Windows 7 or Windows XP]

o A: Never update.  Why we don't recommend running Windows updates automatically.  Although it can be set for a specific time of day or evening, the time setting doesn't seem to stick.  Even though it can be set to only download and not install files, that setting doesn't stick either.  At the most inopportune time you may have to reboot the computer at 2 pm and in doing so you may find that windows updates must apply themselves even though the download was set to ask you and not automatically install themselves.  This results in having to wait for the updates to fully apply.  That can take anywhere from 3 minutes to an hour.  We recommend running Windows Updates by going into the control panel and manually initiating the updates.  We suggest doing this quarterly, when there is a specific issue that is known to be fixed by running them or when an issued is announced on the nightly news.
